Laura Alexander, M.A., M.S.,PLPC
I would describe myself as an empathetic and nurturing counselor who is engaging and playful. I am passionate about fostering a child’s resilient ability to heal and grow through play, and about helping families connect more deeply and authentically with one another. My goal as a therapist is to provide a safe and trusting environment that supports children and families in this process of discovery and growth.
MY APPROACH TO COUNSELING
I believe in the transformative power of an authentic and supportive therapeutic relationship that honors the client as the expert of their lives. Deeply rooted in child and parent-centered approach, I believe that change happens when people feel safe and supported – and so work diligently to create that relationship of safety with both children and caregivers. Together, we identify and celebrate areas of strength and explore and interrupt patterns that aren’t working. I acknowledge the ways that past history and trauma impact our ways of being in the world (including the ways we parent) and strive to help clients recognize and honor their own strength and resiliency. I am in awe of the healing power of play and utilize both directive and non-directive approaches based on clients’ needs and goals. In addition to a person-centered approach, my work is informed by the Synergetic Play Therapy Modality, Relational-Cultural Therapy, and family systems approaches while also utilizing Cognitive Behavioral interventions.
MY EXPERIENCE
I am a Provisionally Licensed Professional Counselor and have experience working with children, caregivers, families, adolescents and adults. I have experience utilizing play therapy in both community mental health and school-based settings, and in leading supportive groups and individual services for caregivers. I specialize in a variety of presenting concerns including anxiety, depression, self-image, aggression, social and behavioral concerns, grief, trauma, and child-caregiver relationship concerns.
MY CREDENTIALS
I received a Masters of Science in Mental Health Counseling from Loyola University New Orleans in 2021, where I received the faculty award for excellence in counseling. I am a Provisionally Licensed Professional Counselor through the state of Louisiana. I am currently working toward full licensure through the state of Louisiana and the Registered Play Therapist certificate through the Association for Play Therapy.
